🧭 Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare
With answers from Ruth Scott, Licensed Medicare Specialist (F.S.B.G.)
1. What is Medicare, and who qualifies?
Medicare is federal health insurance for people age 65 or older, and for some younger individuals with qualifying disabilities. You’re typically eligible at 65 if you’ve worked at least 10 years (or 40 quarters) in the U.S.
2. What’s the difference between Medicare Part A, B, C, and D?
Part A: Hospital coverage (usually free)
Part B: Doctor visits, outpatient services (monthly premium)
Part C: Medicare Advantage (offered by private insurers — includes A & B, often D)
Part D: Prescription drug coverage
3. When should I sign up for Medicare?
Your Initial Enrollment Period is 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after your 65th birthday. If you miss this, you may face late penalties.
4. What’s the penalty if I sign up late?
Part B penalty: 10% per year you delay
Part D penalty: 1% per month you delay without creditable coverage
Avoid penalties by enrolling on time or confirming you have qualifying coverage.
5. What if I’m still working at 65?
If you have employer coverage, you may be able to delay enrolling in Part B and/or Part D without penalty. Let's review your specific situation together.
6. What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?
Medicare Advantage (Part C): One bundled plan through a private company
Medigap: Supplements Original Medicare to reduce out-of-pocket costs
Each has pros and cons — I can help you compare.
7. How much does Medicare cost?
Part A: Free for most
Part B: $179.30/month (2025 standard)
Part D & Advantage plans: Vary based on coverage
I help clients understand their expected costs based on income and state.
8. Can I change plans later?
Yes! During the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7), you can change Advantage or Part D plans. You may also qualify for Special Enrollment Periods after certain life events.
9. Can you help me choose a plan?
Absolutely — that’s what I do! I’ll help you compare Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and drug plans to find the best fit.
